FRONT PLATES NOW: Kent Gillingham of 1531 Avondale Ave. attaches a 1957 auto license tag to the front bumper of his car. The new tags went on sale at secretary of state offices in the county last week. It is the first time since 1944 that two license plates per vehicle are being issued. Edward & Alice Johnson Display New License Plates Identical To Those Of Last Year, February 1959 Photographer: Doug Fulton

Ann Arbor News, February 3, 1959
Caption:
IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE: No one is quite sure what the mathematical probability is, but Mr. and Mrs. Edward O. Johnson of 2855 Dexter Rd. happened to get precisely the same license plates for both of their cars as they had last year. Both sets of plates are identical - down to the last digit. Auto Club officials, where the plates were bought, say the issuance of the same plates was a matter of absolute - and almost unbelievable - chance.

Mr. & Mrs. Robert Olmsted, Illinois Football Fans, Visit Ann Arbor In Their Custom Built Car, November 1956
Year:
1956
Published In:
Ann Arbor News, November 12, 1956
Caption:
READY FOR MICHIGAN: Former Illinois residents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Olmsted, now of Dearborn, waved hello Saturday noon when they arrived in Ann Arbor for the Michigan-Illinois game in their homemade "Olmsted Custom XII." Olmsted, a University of Illinois engineering graduate, used parts ranging from a 1934 Plymouth to a 1956 Cadillac to build this unique vehicle. The motor is a V-12 Lincoln engine and the car runs on either bottled gas or gasoline. Olmsted started work on the car while he was still at Illinois in 1951 and completed it last year. It was a sad day for Illinois rooters as the U-M won 17-7.

South Thayer Street Flooded By Rain, June 1954
Year:
1954
Published In:
Ann Arbor News, June 18, 1954
Caption:
RAIN AND MORE RAIN: For the third straight day the skies opened over Ann Arbor yesterday afternoon and a torrential rain fell. The fall of 1.47 inches in a comparatively brief time flooded streets and many basements. The youth perched on a car hood is riding there so he can leap to high ground. That spare pair of shoes could come in handy if he misses. S. Thayer St., where the picture was taken, was flooded almost to the top of the curb.
